A wonderful and unusual late 18th century table. The overhanging top, with rounded corners, above a single full length and height cedar lined drawer, raised on standard ends with elegant splay legs terminating in brass cap castors.
The understructure mahogany is veneered onto beech and the top onto pine which is stained red; the whole decorated with box wood stringing throughout. Original working lock and key.
The construction and use of secondary timbers suggest Bermuda as the country of origin.

A fine swivel top card table decorated throughout with Hungarian Ash with borders of Purpleheart and Ebony stringing. Stamped by the London makers Holland & Sons and retaining the original cast and chased gilt metal candlesticks which are stored inside the top when closed.
Fomerly in a private residence on manorial land at one time part of the Rothschild estates in Hertfordshire.

Attributable to George Bullock with design features similar to a table of Thomas Hope, illustrated in the book on “Thomas Hope by David Watkin” pl 98, page 227, and now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. A wonderful pollard oak chess table with specimen marble top and faux bronze applied decoration. The octagonal marble set into rectangular top supported by inverted lyre shaped standard ends joined by a turned stretcher, on concealed castors. There is a single divided drawer for chess pieces. Much like the taste for faux rosewood paint effects of the day the applied acanthus, gadrooning, frieze, rosettes and claw feet on this table are patinated plaster to look like bronze.

A rare and captivating carved ebony centre table, the base formed as a tortoise supporting four Foo Dogs from the mouth of each comes a stylised foliate branch rising to hold the circular Verde Marinace marble top.
Given the combination of these traditional and narrative elements, present in the mythology of both Ceylon and Burma since the 4th century and more particularly to the West in the later days of the Empire of The Great Moghal (1526 – 1857), we date this table to the early part of the 19th century prior to the Empire’s demise and give it Myanmar-Sri Lankan provenance.

An absolute gem of an early George III mahogany table in the rarity of its style, action and functionality. The square collared legs and feet show allegiance to an earlier period while forecasting the burgeoning taste among the cognoscenti for the Ecclesiastical Revival, dating it within a very few years to 1760. The action supporting the top when open is one we’ve never seen before where all four legs swing out to allow a clear seating space at each end thus enabling it to serve six people although only 42” by 33” when open, normally only for four. The timber is of the hardest and heaviest Cuban, or ‘Spanish’ so called as the island was at that time a Port of Spain.
It has a slight damage to the rule joints over two of the hinges but we are offering it as it is, for it has never been in a workshop for restoration and its condition suggests only in private ownership since new.
We can effect cosmetic repairs if required.
Truly a delight for a collector or someone with limited space for a family meal.

A remarkable piece of English 18th century architect-designed furniture associated with Sir William Chambers and James Athenian Stuart, and attributable to the maker Robert Ansell. Such furniture was made only for the Royal Households and the highest and mightiest of English aristocracy, for stylistically it shows what in 1770 was the latest classical influence in the manner of Robert Adam, and technically it displays that deep intimacy with the timber which was peculiar to only the world's greatest furniture makers. Of particular note is the grandeur created by the top folding at less than half the diameter. The moulding to the frieze is an ancient classic form, both difficult and expensive to make, and the combination of a formal patera to the leg and a foliate framed cabochon ceased to appear in the 1780s which saw the return of marquetry. The accentuated taper to the leg, waist and entablatures, enriched with carved classical detail, strongly indicate the hand and eye of an architect's influence, rather than that of a furniture designer who might have had more of a mind to economy of material. The density of this fabulous Spanish mahogany is incredible and the colour wonderful and rich.

Of superb proportions and in excellent condition retaining the finest colour and patina. The birdcage mechanism, allowing the top to rotate, has the rare feature of the supporting columns being turned to replicate the main stem.
It measures 31.5" wide across the grain and 32” with the grain, a sure sign as to its authenticity and age.
